Karen Swan – Players

15 May

With the above cover image and a title ‘players’, it could be said the content of this book was obvious. Opening up to the dedication page, it said;

This book is dedicated to my mum (even though she isn’t allowed to read the rude bits), …..

I had a little embarrassed smile creep onto my face at the time. I remember shaking my head, wondering what on earth I was letting myself in for. I’m not a prude, not really, but I do have a tendency to blush. So when I read the acknowledgements, and others were said to not be permitted to read the text, that blush was very red. Oh goodness me.

I hadn’t even got through Chapter 1 and i was texting my friends. This is a must read, seriously, its filth…can you believe my mother past this on to me…

You know what, this book is actually about the complicated relationships we have with our friends, and how love, can be, well, confusing. It is about the ups and downs, the doubts we all have, the choices we make. It will make you blush, but it will also make you smile, laugh, and most definitely cry.

It is set in a rather upmarket social scene, where private helicopters transport the latest bestselling author across the country, and every woman on the way. Tennis matches, and cricket is the norm, whilst careers and homes are enviable. For all they have though, they are just the same as us, even with the comment about having to wear Topshop for the school run when the household budget is cut.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read, and that is the very reason I have held off placing any further details about the plot and the characters. Don’t be put off reading this because you think it is smutty, get past that and you will realise this is a beautifully crafted story. So what if at the end of the day its chick lit – its worth every minute of reading.
